Do members attach a furler to the bowsprit with a shackle or direct to the fitting on the bowsprit.

I use a shackle (has 90 degree twist) because it lifts the furler a little and improves the angle at which the furling line enters the drum. This eliminates riding turns which otherwise frequently jam the furler.

THanks for the input. .I have always used a 90 degree shackle but I have been having a few problems recently and thought that the shackle allowed too much play.
I have a Ronstan furler which has a lead grommet so height shouldn't really matter,perhaps a little more fiction.
Dropped the pin, holding the furler, into the dock ,now waiting for another clevis pin

Zimp has an oversize 90deg shackle. It's oversized to prevent play.

Yes, Aurora has an arrangement like that too. Foresail furls and unfurls very reliably like this. Glad you’re sorted, oak.

Thanks for the picture.That is the same shackle that I have been using,I think my problem has been more with riding turns.
I put it all back together and then discovered it was wrapping the wrong way with the UV strip nicely tucked inside!
Its something to do with age

I always look carefully at the way the sail is rolled, consider how the sheets lie and check which way the furling line is rolled on the drum. Then still rig the Genoa the wrong way around! It’s a 50/50 choice and I get it wrong way more than 50% of the time...

I have every sympathy with Oak dropping the clevis pin into the briny when rigging. I’ve lost two that way. Some months ago, having tried all sorts of standard pins (which don’t fit or are too loose) I emailed Ronstan in Aus to ask if they could supply 4 (I’m bound to keep losing them!). They gave me the part number and referred me to a UK supplier. My order was presumably of little interest to the UK firm as after a nudging second request I still have not had the pins - though to be fair this may be a Covid casualty.

So if you successfully get any supplied can you let me know the contact details of your source please ?

I didn't even attempt to get a prlacement pin for the Ronstan as I am not sure of the thread.Its on there website in Imperial measurements .
I drilled out the fitting and used a 8mm ss clevis pin with ring .Cheap and cheerful
works a treat
