Revarnish CC19 spars

Post by popeye »

Hi,
I 've searched in the yahoo newsgroup and here about varnishing the mast spars and all other woodworks of the CC19 but didn't find enough information.
Can anybody tell me how often you revarnish these things?

Hi Popeye

Ive revarnished my spars once in 7 years. Depends whether your boat is on a mooring and exposed to the Sun. I trailer sail- when not in use the boat is under cover.

Its time to revarnish when you can see varnish flaking or the wood water stained. If left it will darken or go black.

You need to keep an eye on chafe where the gaff jaws meet the mast. I need to revarnish my mast after 2 seasons.

Hi,

Moonstruck lives outdoors virtually 12 months of the year. The spars 'get looked at' annually, and spot varnished, but every 3 years are done properly - full sanding back start again. She's about to go to Rochdale for that very reason.

Rubbing stakes and the grab rails need annual maintenance.

Given the length of our winters and if your CC is hauled out, what better way to
stop the mainsheet hand twitching than doing a complete revarnish every year.
The secret is in the sanding which may reveal other areas that might be missed on
a patch varnish.

I regard varnishing rather like ironing shirts, it's very therapeutic!

A question you may be able to help me with Simon. What spec. of varnish is used on CC's?

Hi David

I do not know what spec of varnish is used- best to have a word with Norma at HM.

I stripped my spars last year and varnished them with Colean- except the mast which was OK. This was the first time in 6 years.

Thank you Simon. I haven't had a wooden spar since my Cadet back in the 60's. May I send you my shirts?

I wonder what level of wear folk with Parrel beads are experiencing?

Please Lord, let the Easter school holidays end a week earlier!

3 coats epoxy plus 2 coats of 2pack perfection varnish = zero wear with parrel balls

Thank you Jack.

That goes to the top of the 2010/11 haul out "to do" list.

Happy sailing
