Maintenance of the mast and woods

Hello everyone I am a new owner and before I can put the vessel in water I have to do some work on because the boat has been standing for some years.
For woods I would like to avoid varnish and use oil (especially for mast and boom).
Has anyone already made this choice? would you recommend it?

Regarding the spars, (mast, boom, gaff) I suspect the need to protect from damage during use rather drives towards a good varnish coating for protection but there may be experience from others. The rest of the woodwork is certainly fair game as you will see from the other thread!

Slightly off subject Alexandros, but are you based in Greece? I can't help with the oil debate as I varnish my mast each year with a Greek varnish that suits the weather here. I stripped it back to bare wood a couple of years ago and continue to be happy with varnished mast boom and gaff. With a good sail cover I rarely need to revarnish the spars. Bow sprit and other external woodwork is now treated with a water based German house paint, so far it seems to work very well. Varnish is Kraft thallasa with UV filter. Other product is Clou aquaclou

On Zimp we use oil. It not that shiny as varnish but it takes only one hour a year to oil all the spars (mast, boom, gaff, tiller and bowsprit)

We use Owatrol Deks Olje D1 or something like that made by the local paint shop.
