clockwise or otherwise

Hi, I had fun with the Yankee today, long story but managed to sort things with the assistance of some words I learnt in the Royal Navy.

My question is, should the Yankee/Genoa furl clockwise or anticlockwise and does it really matter? I appreciate that this is in fact two questions! I spent ages trying to locate some fitting instructions from Ronstan but could only find information on those single line gucci racing furlers.

I furl in the direction which tightens the twist in the luff wire.

Anti clockwise on Kaliope so my sacrificial strip is on the outside..... It was my attempt to put a few more turns on the furler last week (I also use 6mm line) that caused the furler to jam because I tried to get too much line on it.... My 6mm line forced it's way though a 3mm gap.... Still a little mod has cured this...

Gentlemen, thank you. I will be back on the boat tomorrow so will have a look at the lay of the luff rope. Looking at the way the outer edge of the sail has faded it has been furled anticlockwise.

We had this problem for the first time earlier in the season. It was a real pain.
I bought a Harken furling drum the next day. Problem solved. I have to say it was not the cheapest solution but its top quality gear.

Clockwise or anticlockwise.

Dennis's answer is the technically correct one although it is not important for a sail as small as the Yankee on a Cape Cutter. Obviously you have to furl it in the direction that that leaves the protection strip on the outside.

PS If your sail No. is 14 I have a couple of pictures of you sailing in the Orwell taken a few weeks ago.

Hello David, our sail number is fourteen. We were over at Titchmarsh admiring your boat a couple of weekends back.
