Transome angle

Post by Ru88ell »

Does anyone have to hand the angle of the transom from vertical?

Transom Angle

Post by David Peck »

Measuring it from a grp construction drawing it is 18.3 degrees from the vertical assuming the waterline is exactly horizontal. In reality of course most CC19's float slightly higher at the bows relative to their theoreretical waterline.

As a prolific solo rigger and de-rigger I'm found wanting for something to lay the mast on when I'm threading the top tabernacle bolt. The tiller isn't good as the mast can slip off and cause enough twist to take the bolt holes out of alignment. I'm thinking of making a wooden contraption which sits on the transom, straddles the tiller, and is of sufficient height and width so that I can lay the mast on it for rig/de-rig and transportation. It could also be used to fit the light board to, as I'm sure it should be at the back of the boat and not a metre in front of it as most seem to be.

I'll make it from thin ply and 2x1, but I need to know that angle before I start my prototype. Once sorted my dad will knock them our for anyone who wants one. :D

And thanks, David, for being so quick!

Hello Russell

Have you seen Seasickwhale's "boom crutch" in his album: http://www.capecutter19.org/forum/album.php?albumid=16

Incidently Seasickwhale has five albums, none of which are visible via the community links drop down menu!!! Possibly one of your first tasks as webmaster:rolleyes:

I use a similar arrangement on Mary Ann and it works well.

I've seen it and have one not too dissimilar, but it's not stable enough for what I want. All will become clear. ;)

Transom Angle

Post by David Peck »

Hi Russell,

I will shortly put a picture of my mast support device on the website. It caters also for towing with the boom and gaff resting on it. It is stable and allows for the 18 degrees transom angle.

Photos in my album.

It worked a treat - it's lightweight and easily fits inside the car. Travelling was very safe, and rigging was the best ever, as it supports the mast centrally, and then the boom too.

Hello Russell

It looks good.

It also reminds me of the boom crutch fitted to my Winkle Brig. It was permanently attached but could be raised or lowered, it was a most useful feature.

Mmmm! food for thought!
