Just off for a test tow of Zephyr with my new (to me) Freelander2 HSE TD4. Then it's off to SW France on Thursday. I'll let you know how we get on.

Tow cars - Nissan X-trail 173bhp

Just wondering if any of you uses the Nissan X-trail 173bhp (manual) for towing a CC19?
It would be great to have some feedback re towing performance - particularly re recovery up a slipway.

I tow "to and from" with a BMW M3 and launch and retrieve with an electric winch.

Apologies for the tardy response, but I have been off line for two weeks.
I have just returned from two weeks in the Schwarzwald with the caravan (towed by Discovery).:)

As you will have gathered I still own the Disco 3. I plan to replace it next year, but what with?

The problem is everything I look at, is less capable (In my opinion), than the Discovery.:confused:

At this moment it is odds on that I will replace my current Disco 3 with a new Disco 4. Time will tell!

My next major towing excercise is to Friesland with Mary Ann in July. Looking forward to that, :)

Hello again Michiel

An update on the tow car situation.

I have replaced my Discovery 3 with a new Freelander 2 SD4. That is the 190HP auto version.

The D3 was (is) an awesome towcar but was OTT for my needs. I never used the third row of seats and rarely used the second row. The boot space was so big I never needed to drop the second row seats to increase it. Basically the car was much larger than I needed.

The FL2 SD4 is as powerful as as the D3 (but not as powerful as the current D4) and has an unladen weight ("Mass in service" as stated on V5C) on 1967Kg. So it should be well up to the job of towing my CC19 or caravan.

I have not towed with it yet, but I am towing Mary Ann to Friesland next month for ten days of cruising the lakes and canals.

You (or anyone else?) may be able to help me. Do you know what paperwork I require to use the Friesland waterways? I have heard that I may need the Dutch waterways almanac!

Any help or advice would be gratefully received.

Hello Dennis,

While sailing in Friesland I use a map and the Dutch waterways almanac (two volumes).
Formally you only need to have the rules (Binnenvaartpolitiereglement BPR) on board in Friesland. Unfortunately as far as I know are they only published in the Dutch language.
The rules are in volume 1. Volume 2 gives information about bridges (the are a lot of them in Friesland) and harbours.

So you need to have the rules on board (digital or hard copy) but I never have been checked on this for about forty years. I buy a new map and a new volume 2 every one or two years, in Dutch...

You can buy this things in every village with a harbour in Friesland.
