Final thought .
The current online illustration of the Ronstan furler shows it attached with a clevis pin.

Thanks for the very sensible suggestion of enlarging the hole. Unfortunately before I read that the UK supplier had surfaced, quoted me two arms and a leg for 4 pins and rings and I ordered them. So I can lose 3 more over the side before reaching for my drill.
